It is extremely important to rotate your cutter blades often in order to cut with a sharp edge. Cutting with a sharp blades will reduce the wear and tear on your ice edgers' engine/electric motor by keeping it from working too hard. Thomsen recommends blades be rotated or replaced after every 100 hours of use.

If a cutter is chipped or cracked, replace it immediately, there may be hairline fractures in the blade if your edger blades comes in contact with the concrete or steel in your ice arena. Edging your ice sheet with cracked or broken cutter may result in injury. Edging with dull cutters puts additional stress on the engine and cutter bar. It is imperative that the operator does not allow the edger to strike any object other than clean ice. If any of these precautions are not headed, there is a potential for cutter bar breakage and/or engine damage.

If there is a cutter bar failure, a broken piece could fly out from the discharge chute, or from under the edger base at a high velocity and damage your arena or cause personal injury.

Thomsen recommends that at no time should an edger be used with any person other than the operator on the ice sheet.
